James Francis Cameron was born on August 16, 1954 in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada. Cameron emigrated to the United States in 1971. He was the father of an engineer who worked in the field of physics, he studied at California State University before switching to English before dropping out. In order to support his screenwriting goals, he drove a truck. He got his first film position as an artist director, miniature set builder and supervisor of process projection on Roger Corman's Battle Beyond the Stars (1980) and also had his first real-world experience as a director during a two-week time frame on Piranha II: The Spawning (1981) before being fired. He later wrote and directed The Terminator (1984), a futuristic action-thriller starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Biehn and Linda Hamilton. It was a low budget independent film, however Cameron's dynamic, enthralling direction led to it becoming a popular success, and is now considered one of the most iconic pictures of the 1980s. A string of action-packed science fiction films with higher budgets followed, such as Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), The Abyss (1989), as well as Aliens (1986). Cameron founded Lightstorm Entertainment in 1990. In 1997 the year he directed and wrote Titanic (1997), a love story about two young lovers of different social classes who get together on board the famous ship. The film broke all box office records, and won eleven Academy Awards.
