Jeanne Crain was born in Barstow, California, on May 25, 1925. The daughter of an high school English teacher and his wife, Jeanne was moved to Los Angeles not long after her birth after her father got another teaching position in that city. While in junior high school, Jeanne played the lead in a school production that put her on the road to becoming an actor. When she was in high school Jeanne was invited to take the screen test in order to be in a film by Orson Welles. Even though she was not chosen to play the part, it did set Jeanne on her path towards becoming a film actor. Jeanne also enrolled at UCLA to study Drama. Jeanne was just 18 when she won a part in the Fox Studio film The Gang's All Here (1943). The film won her was also awarded an offer to sign. Her next film featured Jeanne taken on an even bigger role in Home in Indiana (1944) the following year. The film was filmed in the state of Kentucky. The film was an enormous success. Because of the box-office success, Jeanne received a boost and a star role, playing Maggie Preston, in the following 1944 film In the Meantime, Darling (1944). The critics, however, not only scorned the film, but also singled out Jeanne's performance in particular. In Winged Victory (1944), her last film of 1944, she was successful. The public loved it, and the film made a profit.
