Jewel's debut album Pieces of You is a classic of the '90s folk scene. Since her debut in the 1990s, Jewel Kilcher has been an undisputed top-of-the-charts performer. However, she's focused on slowing her pace for her family and herself. Jewel Kilcher was born in Alaska however, she had a modest upbringing. Although she was born in Utah, her family moved to Alaska when she was a kid. When her parents divorced at the age of 8 and she left for Alaska together with her father and brother to live in a rural house that was without heat or plumbing in the indoors. They also had an outhouse and was a farmer's family, and basically took care of their own needs, away from the bustle of society. The Kilcher family currently stars on the Discovery Channel reality show Alaska: The Last Frontier if you'd like to get a peek at their lives as they are like. As a young child, Jewel formed a little group of singers with her father, Atz Kilcher, and they would perform yodeling throughout the town in hotels and restaurants.Despite growing up in a home of musicians which gave her an early appreciation for music Jewel's father was not easy (and an alcohol addict) and she made the decision to strike alone when she was 15. She won herself a partial scholarship to study at Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan and raised the funds by holding an event to benefit the high school of her hometown in Homer. After school she headed to San Diego, California to follow her dream of becoming a performer. It wasn't an easy way to fame.
