Magic Johnson, by the name of Earvin Johnson Jr. (born on August 14, 1959 in Lansing (Michigan), U.S.A) was an American basketball player. He played for the National Basketball Association Los Angeles Lakers (NBA) to five championships. Johnson was the son of an autoworker. He was given the nickname "Magic" for his creative and entertaining playmaking. He was an intense competitor who played with his high school team to a state championship in 1977. He also helped lead Michigan State University to the National Collegiate Athletic Association championship in 1979, handing Larry Bird and Indiana State its only loss of that season. Johnson was released from Michigan State after his sophomore season and was selected by the Lakers with the top overall selection during the 1979 NBA draft.Johnson was able to achieve his greatest success within the professional ranks. He he led the Lakers to NBA championships in 1980, 1982 1985, 1987, and 1988. The first time he won a championship was in his rookie season, and in the sixth and title-clinching game of the 1979-80 NBA finals Johnson remarkably played all five positions to secure the Lakers winning championship. This helped him become the first rookie to be awarded the NBA finals the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. He also won the league MVP in 1987, 1989, and 1990. He was a guard at point and gave versatility to the position. He weighed 6' 9" (2.06m) and was an excellent rebounder.
