Nas, born Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones on the 14th of September 1973 is the son of Olu Dara, a unique jazz musician. At the age of nine, he was a member of the Devastatin' Seven in the mid-1980s. The results of which can be heard on his debut album, "Illmatic," which was released by Columbia/SME later in the year. It was notable for its depiction of ghetto life and Nas' refusal not to feature violence or misogyny which is often found in hip-hop. Nas made his first recording appearance on Main Source's "Live at the Barbecue" album. His big break was after MC Serch, a former 3rd Bass's bassist was able to include his lyrics in Halftime on the soundtrack to Zebrahead (1992). This resulted in a management contract with Serchlight Productions, Serchch's management company. Nas's subsequent albums include "It Was Written,"" "I I ...," "Nastradamus," "Stillmatic," "From Illmatic to Stillmatic," "The Lost Tapes Volume. 1," and "God's Son."
