MacDonald was born Norman Gene MacDonald in Quebec City, Quebec on October 17, 1959. MacDonald's career began as a stand-up comedian. MacDonald's first job was to write for The Dennis Miller Show (1992) and then Roseanne (1988). Lorne Michaels was able to spot MacDonald when he was writing for Roseanne (1988). He then gave him his Saturday Night Live (1975) job. MacDonald's trademark line, "And now, the fake news" has made him a popular Weekend Update anchor. The show ran from September 24, 1994 to December 13, 1997, at which point he was fired by Don Ohlmeyer, president of NBC on the west coast. The last update for the weekend was December 13, 1997 and the show was officially ended in March 1998. Dirty Work (1998) was the film he begun working on in the summer 1997. It was released just two months after. The show he hosted on ABC show, Norm (1999), was launched in March 1999 and ran for three seasons. In the same time, he also starred in the film Screwed (2000) with Dave Chappelle.
