Selena was located 50 miles to the away from Houston in Lake Jackson, Texas. She was the daughter of Marcella Quintanilla and Abraham Quintanilla Jr. Abraham started the first Mexican restaurant, Papagayo, in Lake Jackson. Selena was just 9 years old when her father spotted her talent in singing. He formed a band consisting of Selena singing vocals as well as her brother A.B. Quintanilla played bass, and her younger sister Suzette Quintanilla was on drums. The group was named Los Dinos after a band Abraham was a member of in the 50s and 60s, frequently was seen at restaurants. In 1981, the family relocated to Corpus Christi where Abraham started organizing his band for weddings and other events. It was their way of life. Selena and Los Dinos' big break was in 1987, when the 15-year-old Selena received the Tejano Music Award for Female Entertainer of the Year. Selena was presented with the Tejano Music Awards for Female Entertainer of the Year in 1987. Additionally, she was awarded an exclusive record label agreement with Capitol Records, and six highly profitable albums. By 1992, Selena had branched out and started her own clothing line, and was married to her guitarist, Chris Perez. In 1994, she was nominated and was awarded her first Grammy for Best album by a Mexican-American artist, "Selena Live!" Her first boutique opened in Corpus Christi (Texas) that year. In March of 1995, Selena was killed by Yolanda Saldivar, her close friend and president of her fan club.
