Shirley MacLaine

Shirley MacLaine was born Shirley MacLean Beaty in Richmond, Virginia. Kathlyn Corinne MacLean her mother was a drama instructor in Nova Scotia, Canada. Her father, Ira Owens Beaty was an eminent real estate agent and psychologist from Virginia. Warren Beatty was her brother and was born on the 30th of March, 1937. Beatty is of Scottish and English descent. She was the tallest student of ballet at the Washington School of Ballet. After she graduated from Washington-Lee High School, she packed her bags and headed for New York. The producer was constantly mispronouncing her name while she auditioned for Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's "Me and Juliet". Shirley MacLean Beaty became Shirley MacLaine then changed her name to Shirley MacLaine. Later, she was a character in "The Pajama Game" in the role of a member of the chorus and an understudy for Carol Haney. Shirley had planned to quit the show in order to take the lead role in Can-Can However, she was able to take over for Haney who had injured her ankle and could not perform. Three months later, she was able to once more fill in for Carol after another injury. The very same evening Hal B. Wallis, the movie producer, was present.
