Sigourney Weaver was born Susan Alexandra Weaver on October 8, 1949 at Leroy Hospital in New York City. Her father Sylvester L. Weaver Jr. who was a producer on television, initially wanted Flavia to be her name due to his love for Roman historical events. He had already named her brother Trajan the name. Elizabeth Inglis, a British actress was her mother. She had given up her career to support her family. Sigourney was raised in a virtual bubble of blissful happiness, looked after by nannies and maids. In 1959 the Weavers were living in 30 different homes. In 1961, Sigourney began attending the Brearly Girls Academy, however her mother transferred her to another New York private school, Chapin. Sigourney who was 5'10" taller than her peers, was constantly ridiculed and picked on by her peers. Her family in 1962 moved temporarily to San Francisco. Later, they moved back east to Connecticut and she became an student at the Ethel Walker School, facing the same problems as prior. In 1963, she changed her name to "Sigourney" in honor of the character "Sigourney Howard" in F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" (her personal name, Susan, was in honour of her mother's greatest friend
