Sophia Loren was also born Sofia Scicolone on September 20 1934 in the Clinica Regina Margherita, Rome. Her father Riccardo was married to another woman and refused to marry her mother Romilda Villani despite the fact that she was the mother of his two children (Sophia and Maria Scicolone, her younger sister). She was raised in the Pozzuoli slums during the Second World War, and was left with a lot of sadness. When she was 14 she participated in a beauty contest, and was picked as one the top three. Sophia was just 22 years older than her and attracted the attention of Carlo Ponti, a film producer. She later got married to him. Perhaps he was a father figure she did not have as an infant. Sophia was put under his supervision and began as an extra in Le sei mogli Di Barbablu (1950). She then progressed to supporting roles. Because of her beautiful beauty, people laughed that she could save Lazzarus from the dead in these films. she was referred to as "Sofia Lazzaro".
