After years of struggle as a standup comedian in Los Angeles comedy clubs and small-time television commercials, Allen finally found his breakthrough on ABC's sitcom "Home Improvement." The series ran for 8 years and kick-started Allen's acting career, and established himself as an actor and comedian in Hollywood. Allen was able to secure roles in films such as "Galaxy Quest" and "The Santa Clause" after his appearance in the sitcom. He also voiced the character 'Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story film series. Allen was a chaotic person prior to becoming an actor. His father passed away when he was just 11 years old, and he was involved with illicit drugs to earn easy money. He was arrested for the possession of cocaine and placed in jail for 28 months.
