Adele Laurie Blue Adkins (born May 5 1988 in Tottenham, London, England) is an English pop artist and singer. Her soulful voice and traditional songs have made her one of the most adored artists of her time. As a young girl she loved singing popular music of the day and also learned to play guitar and the clarinet. However, it wasn't until her teens, after she discovered the blues-and-rhythm singer Etta James and other mid-20th century performers that she began to think about pursuing a career in music. She started to study at a state-funded secondary school in the performing arts. A friend began posting songs Adkins wrote on Myspace. Her music eventually caught the attention of record labels and, in 2006 several months after graduating, she signed a contract with XL Recordings. After building anticipation in Britain through a few well-received live performances, Adele (as she now called herself) released her first album, 19 in 2008. (The title refers to the age at which she composed many of the songs.) The album came out at the top of the British charts of album sales. Adele's soft phrasing, delicate arrangements and her ability to channel emotional feelings, particularly those of heartbreak and heartbreak into songs that resonated with a wide audience were all praised by the critics. The comparisons she made to Amy Winehouse (a young British singer heavily in the influence of soul music) are not surprising. Adele's affable personality and her zaftig body made her a more accessible star.
