Dwayne Douglas Johnson (also also known as The Rock) was born May 2, 1972 in Hayward. The Rock is the son of Ata Johnson (born Feagaimaleata Maivia) and pro wrestler Rocky Johnson (born Wayde Douglas Bowles). His father, who is from Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada is black (of Black Nova Scotian descent) and his mother is of Samoan origins (her her father was Peter Fanene Maivia, also a professional wrestler). Dwayne grew up traveling frequently with his family and observing his dad wrestle in the boxing ring. Dwayne started playing football in high school. He was soon awarded an all-inclusive scholarship to the University of Miami where he experienced tremendous success as an athlete. Dwayne was denied a spot in the NFL due to a back injury in 1995. Then, he signed a three-year contract with the Canadian League but left after one year to pursue a career in wrestling.He made his debut in wrestling with the USWA under the name Flex Kavanah. He won the tag team title with Brett Sawyer. In 1996, Dwayne joined the WWE and was renamed Rocky Maivia where he joined the group known as "The Nation of Domination" and turned heel. Rocky eventually took over the leadership of the "Nation" and started to adopt the identity of The Rock. After the breakup of "Nation",
