Kevin Jerome Gilyard, popularly known by his stage name Kevin Gates, is an American rapper, singer and businessman. Most well-known for his hit album 'Islah' which came out in 2016, he is also known for his mixtapes, such as 'Stranger than Fiction', and 'By Any Means'. He is considered to be one of America's most successful contemporary singers, having put out many smash singles and mixtapes over his career. Gates began his career at Dead Game Records in 2005. He was signed to the label by a local rapper. In the latter half of 2000, Gates rose in popularity alongside Webster Gradney (popularly known as Webbie) and Torrence Hatch (popularly known as Boosie Bazz). In 2007, the group released their debut mixtape "Pack of Da Litter". In 2008, they released 'All or Nuthin'. Gates is known mostly for his autobiographical themes in his songs. Following the release of his first album, "Islah", Gates became a hugely acclaimed artist. He has cited well-known artists such as Eminem as well as Jay-Z as being his main influencers. Gates isn't just a successful musician however, he also has a darker side. He has been arrested and released from prison several times. He courted controversy after his kicking of a female fan in 2015 during a stage performance. He is currently serving a 30 month sentence in jail.
