Marin met her parents while she was working in the Peace Corps. Born in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and then relocated with her family to Boston, Massachusetts when she was only four months old. Two years later her brother Mark was born. Her father, Rodney, is a retired school teacher. Her mother, Margaret, is a judge of the Massachusetts Superior Court.Marin would like to be a ballerina , and she studied dance until she was 16, after an injury to her ankle ended her dancing aspirations. While concerned about her decision to pursue acting, her parents nonetheless encouraged her to pursue her dreams, but they urged her to pursue an MBA so she could possibly be able to return to teaching if the situation didn't go as planned. After she graduated from Brown University, she enrolled at New York University. She says that she was terrible in the acting classes she took. In 1992, she was introduced to her husband Randall who was an experienced New York theater director. After their success, they both moved to a Hollywood home that they purchased after nine-month separation.Marin was first successful as a performer in New York theater ("Electra" & "The Tempest"), then got small film roles, as well as guest roles on several television shows before her co-starring role on Once and Again (1999). Following the success of the sitcom Two and a Half Men (2003) in which she was cast as Judith Harper and made several appearances as a guest in Law & Order Special Victims Unit (1999).
