Melanie Lynskey, who was 16 years old aged, captured the interest of filmgoers when she made her film debut in Peter Jackson's highly popular psychological crime film, Heavenly Creatures (1994). Her bold portrayal of the real-life Pauline Parker - a teenage marginalized girl whose intense relationship with her one and only friend (a actress who was a pre-star Kate Winslet) spiralled dangerously out of control - was heralded by Time's Richard Corliss as "perfect", whilst earning the New Zealander of just 16 an Best Actress trophy in her motherland. After a gap of three years, Lynskey returned to the silver screen after her successful move to Los Angeles and studying at the university. She was cast as Drew Barrymore's step-sister on Andy Tennant's feminist fairy tale , which was reworked into Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998). Parts in Detroit Rock City (1999), but I'm not a cheerleader (1999), Snakeskin (2001), Coyote Ugly(2000), Snakeskin (2000), Abandon(2002) Sweet Alabama(2002), Sweet Alabama(2002), Shattered Glass(2003) and Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-nominated War epic Flags of Our Fathers (2006) followed.
