Michelle Lynn Monaghan was conceived in Winthrop (Iowa) on March 23, 1976. She is the youngest of three, and the sole daughter of Sharon Hamel, who managed a daycare centre, and Robert L. Monaghan (a farmer and factory worker). Her ancestry is mostly from German and Irish heritage. After finishing high school in Iowa She then studied journalism for three years in Chicago's Columbia College. To pay for college she was model. She quit college in 1999 to work as an actual fashion model New York. She travelled the world, doing stints on the runways in Milan, Singapore, Tokyo and Hong Kong, and also appeared in a variety of magazines and catalogs.In 2000, she made her TV debut with two episodes of Young Americans (2000), later appearing in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999). Her big screen debut with the tiny role as Henrietta in Perfume (2001). Monaghan shot to fame in 2002 when she starred as Kimberly Woods for one season on the TV series Boston Public (2000). After appearing in a variety of parts in supporting roles, she appeared with Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer in the black comedy Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005). In 2005, Monaghan was filming in China, Italy, and the United States on Mission: Impossible III (2006), as the female lead, opposite Tom Cruise.
