Stephen Edwin King was born in Portland, Maine in 1947 The second child of Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. When his parents split, Stephen was a toddler He and his elder brother, David, were raised by his mother. His childhood was lived in Fort Wayne (Indiana), the place where his father was in the time of his separation, as well as in Stratford (Connecticut). When Stephen was 11 years old, his mother brought her children to Durham, Maine, for good. The parents of Stephen, Guy and Nellie Pillsbury, had become incapacitated with old age, and Ruth King was persuaded by her sisters to assume the care and physical needs of the couple who were elderly. Others provided financial support and a small house in Durham. When Stephen's grandparents died the family of Mrs. King found work in the kitchens of Pineland, a nearby residential facility for the mentally handicapped
