Stephen Edwin King was born on the 21st of September 1947 at the Maine General Hospital in Portland. His parents were Nellie Ruth (Pillsbury), who was a caretaker at a mental hospital as well as Donald Edwin King, a merchant seaman. His father was born under the surname "Pollock," but used the last name "King," under which Stephen was born. He has an older brother, David. The Kings were an ordinary family until Donald claimed he was going out for a smoke. Ruth along with the assistance of family members was able to take over the care of the family. Ruth assumed the care of the family and cared for them with assistance from her relatives. David purchased a mimeograph and they created a newspaper they sold for 5 cents per issue. Stephen was a student at Lisbon High School, in Lisbon in the year 1962. In collaboration with his best friend Chris Chesley in 1963, they published a collection of 18 short stories, titled "People, Places and Things, Volume I". King's tales included "Hotel at the End of the Road",
