John William Ferrell was the son of Betty Kay (Overman), an educator, and Roy Lee Ferrell Jr. was a musician. His parents are from Roanoke Rapids in North Carolina.A graduate of the University of Southern California, Ferrell became interested in performing while studying at University High School in Irvine where he performed the school's morning announcements through the public address system with disguised voices. He was a founding member of the Los Angeles comedy/improvisation group The Groundlings in which co-stars Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph and the former Saturday Night Live (1975) repertory performers like Laraine Newman, Jon Lovitz and Phil Hartman started their careers. He was introduced to Chris Kattan there and they became close friends. Both of them appeared on Saturday Night Live (1975). While on the show as a member of The Groundlings, he also made appearances on Strangers with Candy (1999), Grace Under Fire (93) and Living Single (1993). Will also gave his voice to legless and armless dad of the cartoon group "The Oblongs".In 1995, he was a featured cast member on Saturday Night Live (1975) during the show's rapid re-casting. He was declared quite possibly the worst cast member ever in the first season. However, his talents of impersonations and variety of characters pushed him up to make him possibly the greatest Saturday Night Live (1975) cast member.
